Robert Nicholas Eulogy
This is the eulogy I wrote for my father, Robert Nicholas. I wanted to share what I had written for him so everyone could read about the life of service and faith he lived.
Thank you all for coming to celebrate the life and honor the lessons my dad, Robert, has taught us.
I wish I could offer you the trademark gifts that my dad was known for; donuts, cookies, fruit, pens, or even a newsletter. Many of you have received one or more of these tokens. But more importantly, all of us have been recipients of his greatest gift: the countless hours of service he gave freely in true charity and compassion. That lesson of service is one that has been woven into the very fiber of my being. Give freely, give often, and give to those around you that need the help. Robert was the example in the lesson of service and charity emulating the Savior.
Robert also was a classic example of a warrior of God. I am reminded of warrior Joshua of old when thinking of my dad. A man of obedience to the commandments of God and one of perseverance against all odds knowing that his faith will overcome any obstacle. Someone who was not only strong in body, but in spirit and morals as well. Someone who used that strength to come to the aid of his family and others in his community that needed the help. A man who had no issue in being the left hook of retribution when an injustice had occurred. Whether it be his time as a provider to his siblings and mother, his time as a police officer, service to this nation as a proud Marine, or his time as a father, Robert is the example we can look to as a warrior of God.
In speaking with Joshua, I am reminded of the scripture Joshua 24:15 “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” That Robert made sure of. For his life, my dad loved and showed our savior his love for him by taking the commandment love thy neighbor to heart. Early mornings shoveling snow for those around us. Afternoons helping neighbors move heavy things that they could not do themselves. Serving three missions to show his dedication to the faith and service. Always rising to the call-to-action wherever was needed including following horses and shoveling their poop during a parade. Wherever it was needed my father served us and the lord and taught me the importance of service.
We will miss my dad, but his example lives on in each one of us. A mighty soldier, a loving father and husband, a meek servant of the lord, and the most loyal of friend. His physical presence is missed, but his spirit abides. We owe my dad a great amount for his actions, and we can repay him by going forth in the example he gave. My dad taught us that a life of service is a life well-lived. Let us honor him by living that way.
